Mikel Lertxundi Galiana da cuenta detallada de los orígenes del Retrato realizado por Lecuona: La primera versión corresponde a 1877, año en el que Lecuona pinta el retrato de José María Iparraguirre a su regreso de América: ..."la noticia del regreso del bardo guipuzcoano al País Vasco fue acogida con gozo por amplios sectores de la sociedad: «Venga... venga pronto y en buen hora el Sr. Iparraguirre, que Vizcaya le aguarda alborozada para dar un fuerte abrazo al cantor de sus glorias, al hijo amantísimo cuya muerte ha llorado más de una vez» [85]. Con su llegada a San Sebastián poco después de su desembarco en Burdeos el 20 de octubre, dio inicio a una serie de visitas a distintas poblaciones vascas que en diciembre le llevarían a Bilbao. Y allí, en el transcurso de uno de los diversos homenajes con los que fue agasajado, Iparraguirre manifestó «el deseo de regalar un retrato al óleo a mi querido pueblo; el distinguido señor Lecuona, artista de mérito á correspondido á mis deseos» [86]. Las sesiones de posado tuvieron lugar a finales de diciembre en su estudio, y tras la marcha de Iparraguirre a Vitoria en los primeros días de enero de 1878 Lecuona concluyó una copia del cuadro que remitió al Ayuntamiento de Urretxu (Gipuzkoa) el 19 de febrero, dos días antes de que naciera en Bilbao su hijo Félix [87]." Ésta primera versión del Retrato formó parte del conjunto de nueve obras que Lecuona expuso en la Exposición Provincial de Vizcaya de 1882. En 1888 Lecuona realizó una segunda versión del Retrato por encargo del ayuntamiento de Urretxu, para cumplir con las condiciones de la donación que realizara la sociedad Laurak Bat de Buenos Aires. Dicha sociedad remitió cinco mil pesetas de contribución para levantar la estatua de Iparraguirre a cambio de que se le enviara un retrato del bardo. Dicha copia se extravió en el envío por vapor a Buenos Aires. Finalmente, la tercera versión del Retrato la encargó el ayuntamiento al artista para suplir la pérdida. En esta ocasión, solicitó dos copias para que una de ellas fuese conservada en el salón de sesiones del ayuntamiento de Urretxu: "Ambos cuadros estaban terminados para mayo (de 1890) [140], y el destinado a Buenos Aires era remitido en junio. Esta vez sí llegó a su destinatario." Las 'copias' de 1890 difieren de la obra de 1877: en ellas sustituyó el fondo en sombra del cuadro original para "recrear una escenografía simbólica que envuelve al autor del Gernikako Arbola en una mística fuerista", a una década de su muerte. A ojos de la crítica, el cambio restó cercanía al personaje: "No obstante, logró una obra que, con el transcurrir de los años, se tornaría icónica."
